World Music CD albums

Before Folk Music, my favourite music was World / World Fusion – not a million miles apart really. Here’s an ever changing list of my favourite World music CD albums:

Night Song – Real World

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Michael Brooks’ beautiful Qawwali based masterpiece.

Shahbaaz – Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

Another Real World release. Beautiful (again).

Sheila Chandra – Speaking in Tongues

My favourite Sheila Chandra album and I love them all.

Cool and Unusual – Martin Simpson

Martin’s tribute to Malagasy music by way of European and American folk varieties.

1995 Real World sampler

The CD that kicked things off for me – contains Papa Wemba, Sheila Chandra, Matt Molly and the Sabri Brothers.

Dub Qawwali – Gaudi and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

Hypnotic remixes and reworking of some of NFAK’s recordings.

Music in the World of Islam

Recordings of songs and music from the full range of Islamic culture.

Karma Collection

Collection of ‘pop’ inspired World Fusion music. A double album.

Drummers of Burundi – Live at Real World

What it says on the tin!

Sacred Ceremonies – JVC

A collection of well produced recordings of religious ceremonies from around the World. My first experience of Tuvan throat singing.

Natacha Atlas – Diaspora

A good introduction to the woe of Natacha Atlas.

Musicians of the Nile – From Luxor to Isna

Atmospheric collection of songs.

Toumani Diabate – King of the Kora

Hypnotic Kora from probably the most accomplished kora player in the Universe.

Ofra Haza – Kirya

A bridge between Israeli and Arabian culture. An artist sorely missed by many.

Papa Wemba – Le Voyageur

Infectious rhythms and powerhouse vocals – grooving!

Hemisphere No More – EMI

Another compilation of various recordings from around the world.

Shye Ben-Tzur – Shoshan

Another artist trying to bridge the divide between Arab and Israeli culture and faith.

The Rough Guide to Sufi Music CD 1 and CD 2

Inspiring and moving collection of Sufi music recordings

Indestructible Soweto 2 – Thunder before Dawn

Predominantly Zulu music. Uplifting and ceaseless (in the best possible way).

Nimbus World sampler 2

World Music sampler from the Classical Music label based in Monmouth, Wales. Quality recording production.

Talvin Singh – Ha! and Okay

Some of my earliest purchases from the genre of World Fusion.
