I was sad to hear of the passing of actor Ralph Waite (John Walton). The Waltons was one of my most favourite TV programmes from my childhood and (I think) somewhat unique in its format of extended narrative. The ‘wholesomeness’ of it was wonderful too and it still hasn’t lost its charm, repeated as it is, on Digital TV. Family entertainment needs something like it today. Ralph Waite was always believable as John Walton even though his personal life was troubled. Michael Learned (his on screen wife) said,
“He was my spiritual husband. We loved each other for over 40 years. He died a working actor at the top of his game.
“He was a loving mentor to many and a role model to an entire generation.”
A fitting tribute, I think.
